Improve Your Mood with Food

More than two years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic upended our lives. As we return to a "new normal," many of us have mixed feelings. Social isolation has increased anxieties, mood swings, and sometimes bouts of depression.

Here’s what you can you do to help fuel your mind and boost your mood. The old adage of "you are what you eat" has truth to it. Eating healthy and leading a lower-stress life filled with physical activity and hope does make a difference. Research shows a Mediterranean diet can help sustain a good mood, as well as reduce cardiovascular risk, promote anti-cancer mechanisms, and slow bone loss in osteoporosis. Some research even found a reduced risk of future depression.

A Mediterranean-style eating plan is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats. While a Mediterranean diet is limited in meats and dairy, and moderate in poultry and eggs, fish and seafood are key ingredients.

So... let's use Sifter to find healthful and delicious salmon:

  1. First, select the Seafood aisle. Then select Fish, and then Salmon. There are roughly 130 products to choose from.
  2. Scroll down to Lifestyle Diets and select Clean-style. This narrows your choices to about 55 products.
  3. Scroll down to Health Diets and click on Mood - Managing. There are ~50 salmon choices to choose for your next mind-healthy, mood-boosting meal.
